Cancun International Airport will be revamped this year. Aeropuertos del Surest (ASUR) plans to renovate and expand passenger services at the airport for $1.4 billion.
According to the Cancun Sun, Terminal 1, Terminal 4, and a new Maya Train Station will be upgraded. Terminal 4, a domestic and international terminal, handles nine million passengers annually.
A variety of airlines operate from the terminal including Frontier Airlines, JetBlue Airways, Southwest Airlines and Sun Country Airlines. Europe-based carriers also use the terminal.
The billion-dollar plans include expanding Terminal 4 to accommodate more flights and passengers, according to the Cancun Sun. Hotel and lounge plans for the terminal are still being finalized.
The massive Cancun International Airport renovations will include Terminal 1, which handles private and charter flights. The terminal serves luxury travelers and a small Belizean airline.
Cancun International Airport, Mexico's second busiest, handles over 30 million passengers annually.
The Cancun Sun reported that airport users may face challenges during renovations and upgrades. This may delay planes to their gates and affect terminal services.
The renovation plans also include adding a new train station for the Maya Train, which had its ribbon cutting in late 2023 and currently serves Cancun through Campeche.
Train line work includes adding service south to Playa del Carmen and Tulum and between Cancun and the Cancun International Airport.
Upon completion, the 950-mile train will link Cancun to numerous popular tourist destinations, such as Palenque and Calakmul.
